RECAP: Bobcats Comeback Falls Short Against Kodiaks

An early third period comeback bid came up short for the Lloydminster Bobcats on Saturday night as the Camrose Kodiaks completed a weekend sweep with a 4-2 win at the Encana Arena.

Zach Kaiser and Wilson Northey struck on the power play early in the final frame, while Austin McGrath made 34 saves on the night.

Trailing 3-0 after the second period, the Bobcats man advantage unit got to work as Kaiser walked out of the corner a minute into the third and beat Kodiaks goaltender Patrick Gora far side for his 11th of the year to make it 3-1.

29 seconds later, Wilson Northey converted a feed out of the corner from Brady Barclay for the Bobcats third power play goal in two games this weekend, and suddenly the Kodiaks lead was cut to one.

However, the Kodiaks quelled the Bobcats storm midway through the period when Colin Schmidt found a loose puck in front of McGrath and was able to tuck it five hole to make it 4-2.

A late push by the Bobcats game close to making it a one-goal game, but Daniel Hilsendager's wrist shot rang off the cross bar and stayed out to keep it at 4-2.

Tonight's game was evenly played until late in the first period when Cooper Johnson found a hole in the Bobcats defence and beat McGrath with a shorthanded goal to make it 1-0 at the 14:35 mark. In the final minute of the period, Matt Gervais finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe play from Nicolas Correale and Bryson Traptow for a power play marker to make it 2-0 after one.

Zachary Vinnell snuck a shot through traffic and past McGrath in the second to make it 3-0, setting the stage for the Bobcats comeback attempt in the third.

The Bobcats have now lost six straight, and will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night when the Whitecourt Wolverines come to town.
