Unable to fully capitalize on a potential momentum switch, the Lloydminster Bobcats came up just a little bit short Sunday afternoon in Spruce Grove as they wrapped up a three game in three day stretch.
Hanging around with the defending AJHL champions and trailing by a score of 1-0 in the third period, the Bobcats began to tilt things in their favour.
Breaking into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1, second-year Bobcat’s forward Rylan Nivon set up Chance Adrian in tight and the ’99-born pulled to his back hand and slid the puck past Saint’s goalie Matthew Davis.
Shortly after the goal a five-minute major penalty was called against Spruce Grove after Cole Basnett delivered a blow to the head of Logan Bromhead.
Unfortunately for the Cats, they were unable to generate much on the man-advantage and after the penalty expired the Saints quickly struck.
Going on a power-play of their own, Logan Ganie snapped a wrist-shot past Bobcat’s goalie Justin Vertesi to give the Saints a 2-1 lead with only 7:15 remaining in the game.
Just under three minutes later Seth Fyten tipped home his second goal of the game as Spruce Grove took their first two goal lead of the contest with under five minutes to play.
Ganie then put the game away with just 31 seconds left when he scored his second goal of the contest to make it 4-1.
The scoring began 6:15 into the opening frame with a Fyten goal.
Spruce Grove went on to outshoot the Bobcats 39-18 in the game.
With the power-play, the Bobcats finished 0 for 3, while the Saints went 1 for 4.
Up next for Lloydminster will be a trip to Bonnyville on Friday night to take on the rival ‘Yaks. Game time is set for 7:30.
